Community Energy Project is proud to provide a variety of direct, In-Homes services and educational workshops, and participate in important advocacy work. Behind all of these vital efforts is a team of vibrant, multifaceted, and hardworking individuals. The CEP Staff Spotlight is a series dedicated to the people who make everything we do possible. Today’s spotlight shines on CEP’s Healthy Homes Program Coordinator, Alexander Vasquez.
1. Describe your role at CEP and what makes you passionate about your position.
Inepo Alexander Vasquez-Ibarra teak (My name is Alexander Vasquez-Ibarra - Yaqui). As the Healthy Homes Program Coordinator, I provide lead poisoning prevention education and additional information around contaminants in our homes that can make us sick, such as mold, radon, carbon monoxide, and other indoor air pollutants. I am passionate about working directly with communities.
2. What is your work background and one unique skill you bring to CEP?
I have served in a lot of high level political and government roles where I found the work was very disconnected from frontline communities. It was always instilled in me from my Grandmother that we, as Native people, must take care of our community and homes.
Our home is the center of where our health is. It's where we cook together, gather with family, mourn, and heal. It is a safe space, and I am passionate about protecting that safe space in whatever role I am in, wherever I may be.
3. Describe one accomplishment you’ve made at CEP or a goal you have for the future in this role.
In my role, I have taken the Repair, Renovation, and Paint (RRP) Certification, which is valid for five years. This class taught me the safety standards contractors must follow when working on homes presumed to have lead in paint.
4. If you had to pick one meal to eat for the rest of your life, what would it be?
If I had to pick one meal for the rest of my days, I would choose to eat quail eggs! My husband and I raise and care for our own quails. We collect our own eggs to use in marinated dishes, steamed eggs, or all kinds of breakfast assortments.
