Staying Safe at Home: 6 Quick Tips for Mold Mitigation

6 Quick Tips for Mold Mitigation

Cold isn’t the only seasonal change impacting your home. While many sources of mold are natural and harmless, having mold and mildew in your home can have unintended consequences for your home and health.

With wet weather just around the corner, we want to make sure you’re equipped with the tools to clean and prevent mold growth in your home. Use the tips below to protect your home and minimize mold growth risk to yourself and your family.

  1. Mold control = Moisture control. Keep humidity levels in your home at an ideal level of 30-50% when possible.

  2. Use exhaust fans in the kitchen and bathroom to vent air freely outside.

  3. Check for common leaks around your bathroom and kitchen appliances.

  4. Clean and maintain gutters and downspouts, directing water away from your home.

  5. You can clean mold yourself if the mold area is less than 3 sq. ft., but seek professional help if it’s larger.

  6. Clean and scrub mold as soon as possible using a disposable sponge, gloves, and diluted hydrogen peroxide or vinegar at a 1:1 ratio with water.

Get more information about mold and mildew safety and other home health risks at Community Energy Project’s free Lead Poisoning Prevention and Mold Workshop. In addition to learning how to prevent and safely clean mold, participants will learn about the health effects and common sources of lead exposure and basic prevention measures to limit exposure. Qualified participants will also receive a free mold and lead cleaning kit.
