The Results are In: North Portland Springtime Cleanup
The Metro-Funded North Portland Enhancement Project to provide safety-related yard debris removal, gutter cleaning, smoke alarm testing, household hazardous waste removal, and door and window screen mending in North Portland was a success! Here are some fun facts about the project:
With the help of 11 volunteers (who served 60 hours), we were able to serve 23 clients by: removing 3.27 tons of yard waste, cleaning 13 gutters, providing four minor plumbing repairs, servicing smoke detectors for three clients, removing hazardous material from the homes of two clients, and removing 500 square feet of invasive plant species. Several clients took the effort to call us and express how pleased they were with the services they received. A special thanks to our volunteers who helped make it happen!

The program will provide 40-50 local residents with information and free conservation devices to help effectively "water to the weather," and reduce runoff from lawns and gardens to protect water quality, especially in Combined Sewer Overflow (CSO) areas. Jan. 11, 2008 Oregon HEAT Oil Recycling Program
TUALATIN, Ore. – Partnering with the environmental award-winning oil recycler, Oil Re-Refining Company, Oregon HEAT is ramping up a new and different kind of statewide oil donation program.
This endeavor will help ease the burden on low-income Oregonians who face volatile heating oil prices, all while reducing petroleum waste products in Oregon. The oil program also helps Oregon HEAT and its partners reach more at-risk families and expand service to new areas of Oregon. Here’s how the program works: Homeowners decommissioning their oil tanks can donate their remaining home-heating oil to help people in their community with their emergency energy needs. Just call Oregon HEAT at 503-612-3790. Oregon HEAT will contact ORRCO and ORRCO will make arrangements with the donor for oil pickup.
Businesses and industries that generate contaminated petroleum products, like dirty fuels and crankcase oil, can donate to Oregon HEAT by having these products recycled. Again, they need only call Oregon HEAT who will then pass on the data to ORRCO. ORRCO will set up regular scheduled pickups. The products are recycled, the businesses help their neighbors in need, and all of Oregon wins...

CEP Granted Department of Justice Funds! Train the Trainer Program!
Press Release August 9, 2007
Community Energy Project (CEP)
responded to the State of Oregon, Office of Attorney Generals’ award
announcement on August 8th with gratitude. Their response
was prompted by the Department of Justice’s award of a total of
$248,000 to CEP to support energy education, simple weatherization
measures for low-income families, and a train-the-trainer program to
help other organizations provide similar energy education services
to other communities in Oregon. Grant awards are derived from a
series of settlement agreements with energy companies for
investigations into allegations of price manipulation and antitrust
violations in 2000 and 2001 during the West Coast energy crisis.
“These settlements are a positive outcome from unfortunate events that involved taking advantage of Oregon citizens,” said Governor Kulongoski. “These grants bring new investments that will benefit the lives of many vulnerable Oregonians.”
“Distributing these grant awards closes a sad chapter in our state’s history in which Oregonians were victimized by price manipulation of the energy market,” stated Attorney General Hardy Myers.
CEP was the recipient of two grants: $128,372 to expand two weatherization programs that teach simple weatherization measures to low-income families and install such measures for households of senior citizens and people with disabilities, and $120,000 to develop a “train-the-trainer” program to help other organizations provide similar energy education services to communities throughout the state.
“We are a small grassroots organization and are honored to receive these awards. We feel that they are an affirmation that the state recognizes empowerment, working person-to-person, as a valuable strategy in solving social and economic problems. Their investment at the grassroots level is a direct investment in our communities,” said CEP Executive Director Sherry Burbach.
Community Energy Project, Inc. provides education, hands-on
training, and distribution of weatherization, water conservation,
and lead poisoning prevention materials. CEP also provides direct
weatherization and water conservation services to seniors and people
with disabilities. These activities are the means CEP uses to
forward its mission to empower people in the Portland metro area to
maintain healthier, more livable homes, control their utility costs,
and conserve natural resources.
